Authentic African dolls, whether for play or for magic have been created and used for centuries. Among the most famous of these dolls are the Akuaba dolls of the Ashanti people in Ghana. Ashanti carvers allow themselves free reign in interpreting traditional elements; however, true Akuaba dolls invariably have disc-shaped heads with high-arched brows, a high forehead, and a straight nose. This particular doll of a woman riding a lion which symbolizes the power of the Ashanti Empire depicts the warrior. The warrior woman holding her breast while riding the lion signifies her attaining puberty and this doll is given to young girls to encourage them to do this in the community that men do. The woman warrior is holding her breast which signifies puberty and riding on a lion is a sign of her freedom literally saying she can do what men can do. The doll is made out of wood with an elaborate hairstyle, and beads around her waist, neck, and earing by the Ashanti craft men of Ghana. This kind of doll is given to a woman to encourage them to do lots of things in the community as done by men. An example is the queen mother of the Ashanti who helps to defeat the British army.
