Wonderful large vintage Mexican Tlaquepaque pottery pitcher, dating approximately to the 1930s–1940s.

This striking hand-painted pitcher has an unusual matte blue ground decorated on both sides with large stylized flowers and leaves in muted red, green, cream and deep blue. Fine hand-painted feathered foliage extends around the sides of the pitcher.

The tall, flattened form is particularly unusual. Viewed from the front, the pitcher has a generously rounded body, long narrow neck, dramatic pouring spout and tall loop handle. From the side, it is remarkably slender at approximately 3” deep.

The underside is impressed MEXICO and additionally stamped MADE IN MEXICO.

A beautiful example of early Mexican folk and art pottery, with wonderful Art Deco-era styling.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate surface wear, rubbing, small areas of pigment/slip loss and other signs of age and use. The interior also shows age and use.

This is a genuinely hand-crafted piece, so irregularities in the pottery, decoration and surface are characteristic of its handmade construction and age.

A substantial and highly decorative piece of vintage Mexican pottery, especially appealing for collectors of Tlaquepaque pottery, Mexican folk art, Southwestern decor and early 20th-century Mexican ceramics.

For decorative/collectible use. Because of the age of vintage Mexican pottery and the possibility of lead in period glazes, I would not recommend this piece for serving food or beverages.
