Wonderful early Mexican hand-painted pottery wedding jug, believed to date from approximately the 1920s–1940s and attributed to the Tlaquepaque pottery tradition of Jalisco, Mexico.

This small double-spouted vessel has a tall arched central handle and is completely hand decorated in matte opaque colors.

Each of the four sides has its own charming Mexican folk-art scene:

• One broad side depicts a traditional house beside a prickly pear cactus

• The opposite side depicts a seated woman beside a large agave-type plant

• Each narrow end is decorated with a different landscape and vegetation scene

The body has a soft matte green ground with blue decoration around the two openings and handle, along with muted terra-cotta, green, black, white and red details.

The underside bears an impressed MADE IN MEXICO mark.

This double-spouted form is commonly referred to as a Mexican wedding jug or wedding vase, a form associated with wedding symbolism and the joining of two people.
