Juan Horta Castillo (1940–2006) was a premier master artisan from Tócuaro, Michoacán, Mexico, celebrated primarily for his intricate, award-winning traditional masks. While his famous Diablo (devil) masks frequently appear on the market, large-scale custom figures like this carved wooden mermaid (sirena) are much rarer.
The distinctive, expressive face—characterized by almond-shaped green eyes, pronounced cheekbones, and carefully lined, glossy red lips—is a signature aesthetic of the Horta family's human and anthropomorphic carvings.
The piece is coated in a glossy, high-finish lacquer or automotive enamel, a classic hallmark of the Tócuaro woodcraft tradition that makes the vibrant colors pop.
