Up for sale a VERYRARE! "English Essayist" Nathan Drake Clipped January 1766– 7 June 1836), English essayist andphysician, was born inYorkasthe son ofNathan Drake, an artist. Heis well known for a book that sums up knowledge of Shakespeare available at thetime. Drake was apprenticed to a doctor in York in 1780, and in 1786 proceededtoEdinburgh University,where he took his degree as M. D. in 1789. In 1790 he set up as a generalpractitioner atSudbury,Suffolk, where he found an intimate friend inJohn MasonGood(died 1827). In 1792, Drake relocated toHadleigh, where he died in 1836.Drake's works include several volumes of literary essays, and some paperscontributed to medical periodicals, but his most important production wasShakespeareand his Times, including the Biography of the Poet, Criticisms on his Genius,and Writings; a new Chronology of his Plays; a Disquisition on the Object ofhis Sonnets; and a History of the Manners, Customs and Amusements,Superstitions, Poetry and Elegant Literature of his Age(2 vols,1817).[2]The title adequately indicates the scope ofthis ample work, which has the merit, saysG. G. Gervinus, "ofhaving brought together for the first time into a whole the tedious andscattered material of the editions and the many other valuable labours ofTyrwhitt,Heath,Ritson, etc". An important medical work ofDrake's isOn the Use of Digitalis in Consumption(five paperspublished in theMedical and Physical Journal, London, 1799–1800).HisLiterary Hours(1798) were exceedingly popular early inthe 19th century (4th ed., 1820).[4]Drake is also credited with discovering thepoetHenry Neele.
