Rick McCollum\'s adaptation of the Grizzly Elkins story \"Law-Shootersof Cowtown\" is the most violent Robert E. Howard comics adaptation ever.Page after page of brutal, savage battle. Robert E. Howard\'s storytelling heatsup and gets out of hand as male dominance has its way \"Grizzly\" style.
This issue\'s\"Law-Shooters of Cowtown\" is prime example of Robert E. Howard at hisfast-paced, bloodthirsty best. indeed, change a few elements and it couldeasily be a Conan or Crusader tale. Grizzly Elkins is a typical Robert E.Howard hero; strong, feral, able to take incredible punishment and living byhis own peculiar code of honor.
\"Law-Shooters of Cowtown\" was written in 1933 for Howard\'s agent, OtisAdelbert Kline, to circulate. It never sold. The original manuscript is ondisplay at Howard\'s home in Cross Plains, Texas. It was later first publishedin Cross Plains #4, Summer 1974.
Story(Spoilers!)
Grizzly Elkins was one of the army of buffalo hunterswandering between the Pecos and the Upper Missouri, he was as much a part ofthat wild land as one of the beasts he hunted. Truly a grizzly man to bereckoned with...as the townsfolk of Cowtown would soon find out. When a game ofchance take a wrong turn in the Silver Boot Saloon, Grizzly Elkins, buffalohunter, unleashes a brutal and deadly attack on Jack Kirby, a gambler and gunman.Fellow saloon patrons do not take kindly to the death of Jack and shout,\"Grab him\", \"Shot him\", \"He murdered Kirby, the son ofa...\" and things quickly escalate until Buck Chisom, The Marshall\'s gun-fightingdeputy intervenes and Grizzly Elkins findshimself in the town\'s jail. However, the saloon patron\'s blood lust for revengeis not satiated and they inadvertently \"bust him out\" as they\"bust in\" to take justice into their own hands. Big Mistake!!! Deathand mayhem ensue has Grizzly Elkins leaves a bloody wake on his way out.
