A Victorian-era woman, captured in solemn grace, is the subject of this classic tintype photograph. Her dark, neatly patterned dress and the stern expression on her face are characteristic of the period. This found photo comes from the private collection of an unknown and/or unknowing art collector.This is a tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype; a photograph printed on a thin piece of metal that had been coated with lacquer or enamel. They were most popular during the 1860s and 1870s, but are still made today. This is known as a 1/9 plate tintype, since it measures about 2 x 2.5 inches.
The back of the tintype is unadorned with no inscriptions or maker\'s mark, maintaining the mystery of its origins.
