Vinča culture,also known asTurdaș culture,Turdaș–Vinča cultureorVinča-Turdaș culture, is aNeolithicarchaeological cultureofSoutheast Europe, dated to the period 5700–4500 BC or 5300–4700/4500 BC.Named for itstype site,Vinča-Belo Brdo, a largetellsettlement discovered by Serbian archaeologistMiloje Vasićin 1908, it represents the material remains of aprehistoricsociety mainly distinguished by its settlement pattern andritualbehaviour.

Farming technology first introduced to the region during theFirst Temperate Neolithicwas developed further by the Vinča culture, fuelling a population boom and producing some of the largest settlements in prehistoric Europe. These settlements maintained a high degree of cultural uniformity through the long-distance exchange of ritual items, but were probably not politically unified. Various styles hallmarks of the culture, as are theVinča symbols, which some conjecture to be the earliest form ofproto-writing. Although not conventionally considered part of theChalcolithicor \"Copper Age\", the Vinča culture provides the earliest known example ofcoppersmeltingin the Old World.
