Subject: Hiram Powers (July 29, 1805 – June 27, 1873) was an American neoclassical sculptor. He was one of the first 19th-century American artists to gain an international reputation, largely based on his famous marble sculpture The Greek Slave.

The photographer is Nicholas Longworth Powers (L. Power). He was the son of Hiram Powers, a very successful American sculptor. The Powers family relocated to Florence, Italy, in 1837, where Hiram taught his son sculpture and art while Nicholas worked as a bookkeeper. In 1860, Nicholas started working as a photographer. He created his own company and created portraits of prominent men and women in the city.
