Measuring 8 3/4" by 15", this 18th or 19th-century Fra Angelico style Italian Icon Painting is titled "The Virgin and Child." …

This authentic antique icon painting is painted on a shrine-shaped 3/8" thick panel. There are craved rays around Mary and Baby Jesus, just like the Italian Gold Gilt Angels we usually sell, so we believe this icon was made in Italy.

This piece is in good condition with the exception of some signs of age. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page. This antique piece will be an authentic and beautiful addition to any décor or collection.

P.S. The majority of this icon painting is in very good, original, unrestored condition. However, there is wear to the blue cloak at the bottom. There is also some darkening of the gold gilt around the edge and a water stain on the lower right-hand corner. Also, the two wood braces are missing from the back, and this panel is slightly bowed. …

This very beautiful antique Italian Gothic style painting in gilded wood features a hand painted image of the Virgin and Child with halos incised in the gold leaf background and was inspired by the famous “Madonna of the Star” (Madonna della Stella) reliquary by Fra Angelico in the San Marco Museum in Florence.

The piece featured here is not framed but probably was previously framed in a Gothic arch with spiraling columns called “Solomonic” columns, as tradition has it that such columns were present in Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem.

Pieces such as this one, which were created by artisans and artists in the 19th century, were inspired by masterpieces of Italian religious art and were made for Europeans and Americans who were making the famous Grand Tour.

Since 2006 the record price for this artist at sale is 6,360,494 USD for The Crucifixion with the Virgin, Saint John the Baptist and the Magdalen, sold at Christie's London in 2023.

Fra Angelico has been featured in articles for Artmajeur Magazine, Arte Fuse and ArtDependence Magazine. The most recent article is Jesus Christ the Gardener: Noli Me Tangere in Art written for Daily Art Magazine in April 2024.
