Description11th Miwa Kyusetsu – White Hagi Chawan “Yuki no Hana” – Japanese Tea Bowl
A fine Japanese White Hagi Chawan (matcha tea bowl) by 11th-generation Miwa Kyusetsu (十一代 三輪休雪), a designated Living National Treasure of Japan for Hagi ware.
The work is titled:
“Yuki no Hana” (雪の華 / Snow Flower)
The expressive white glaze and distinctive form create a beautiful and atmospheric appearance characteristic of Miwa Kyusetsu’s Hagi ware.
The reverse side of the wooden box lid bears the Kao (signature mark) of Jimyosai (而妙斎), the 14th-generation Grand Master of Omotesenke. Omotesenke’s official materials identify 而妙斎 as Jimyosai, the 14th-generation head of the school.
This is an attractive work for collectors of Hagi ware, Japanese tea ceremony utensils, Chawan, and modern Japanese ceramics.
Artist Biography11th Miwa Kyusetsu (十一代 三輪休雪, 1910–2012) was a major Japanese Hagi ware ceramic artist.
He inherited the traditions of Hagi pottery while becoming particularly known for his expressive white glaze and bold sculptural forms. He succeeded to the name 11th Miwa Kyusetsu in 1967, was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for Hagi Ware (Living National Treasure) in 1983, and in 2003 passed the Kyusetsu name to his eldest son and adopted the name Jusetsu (壽雪).
