Description11th Miwa Kyusetsu – Oni-Hagi Chawan “Unkai” – Japanese Tea Bowl
A fine Japanese Oni-Hagi Chawan (matcha tea bowl) by 11th-generation Miwa Kyusetsu (十一代 三輪休雪), a designated Living National Treasure of Japan for Hagi ware.
The work is titled:
“Unkai” (雲海 / Sea of Clouds)
The bold form and expressive glaze create a dramatic landscape-like appearance characteristic of Oni-Hagi ware.
The underside of the wooden box lid bears the Kao (artist’s seal/signature mark) of Hounsai (鵬雲斎), the 15th-generation Urasenke Grand Master.
This is a highly attractive piece for collectors of Hagi ware, Japanese tea ceremony utensils, Chawan, and modern Japanese ceramics.
Artist Biography11th Miwa Kyusetsu (十一代 三輪休雪, 1910–2012) was an important Japanese Hagi ware ceramic artist active during the Showa and Heisei periods.
While inheriting the traditional techniques of Hagi ware, he became especially known for his distinctive white glazes and bold sculptural forms.
- 1967 – Succeeded to the name 11th Miwa Kyusetsu and inherited the Miwa kiln.
- 1983 – Designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for Hagi Ware, commonly known as a Living National Treasure.
- 2003 – Passed the Kyusetsu name to his eldest son and adopted the name Jusetsu (壽雪).
