RARE HUGE 15" Diamete IDENTIFIED Antique 1760 Colonial Pewter TRENCHER / CHARGER:
HUGE 15" Diameter IDENTIFIED Antique Colonial New England Pewter "Trencher" (Also Known as a "Charger") Serving Plate, Over 47" Edge Circumference, c.1760 - 1770
VERY RARE WITH OWNER IDENTIFIED INITIALS "L.W."
DESCRIPTION:Scans show it all.....particularly early and particularly huge antique colonial pewter TRENCHER/CHARGER, 15"diameter (and OVER 47" AROUND THE OUTSIDE PERIMETER EDGE). Very deep area for food. The trencher was the LARGEST PEWTER PLATE USED DURING COLONIAL DAYS, PRIMARILY AS A SERVING PLATE TO SERVE FOOD TO INDIVIDUALS IN THE FAMILY. They did not have platters as we know them, and used this instead. Typically used by upper classes as was other pewter due to the cost of it for the common man.
THIS ONE IS PARTICULARLY RARE AS IT IS IDENTIFIED WITH THE OWNERS INITIALS ON THE FRONT ON THE EDGE RIM. NICELY STAMPED WITH INITIALS "L.W". Nicely marked and scans show it all. I can count on one hand the ones with initials I have seen over the past 40 years.
No maker's hallmarks, further indicating that it is early, possibly earlier than 1760, and possibly made in colonial America rather than England.
THIS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST ANTIQUE TRENCHERS I HAVE SEEN.Can be used as a functional itemor as a very nice, VERY IMPRESSIVE antique or colonial period decorative item with a collection or on a mantle, in a dining room or kitchen, or on the wall. This is a very earlycolonial piece, no later than 1760-1770, and could be even earlier given its appearance.
Has a simple rolled edge, and a nice decorative line etched around the rim. In good conditionoverall with NICE AGED PATINA.It shows its age and use nicely, and has a nice antique appearance. It came out of alocal New England pewter collection.
A great addition to any collection or for display, OR EVEN A NICE ITEM FOR USE.
