Circa 1887 – the Flag that never was. The rare 39-star flagwas never an official flag of America. 39 stars is an unofficial count becauseof the introduction of North Dakota (39) and South Dakota (40) at one time, insteadof as a single Dakota state (formerly the Dakota territory). Congress dividedthe Territory and admitted the North and South Dakota, Montana, Washington, andIdaho all together in 1889.Howeverin 1889 four states where added, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, andWashington. This changed the star count from 38 to 42 stars, making the 39 starflag unofficial but an amazing part of American history.

Since many people anticipated a single state, rather than two,in the late 1800s Flag manufacturers mistakenly gambled possibility of theDakota Territory entering the Union and produced and manufactured the flag of39-star flags.

This was a parade flag.

Great for framing.
