A 4.5x2.5" vintage photo from a huge collection of 1940's plane prints that we acquired from the estate of an aviation buff (and pilot) named Gene Mutter who lived in Southern California.

Photo Overview

This vintage World War 1 era aviation photograph shows a Vickers F.B.9 “Gunbus” fighter airplane posed on a grass airfield, captured in side profile to clearly display its distinctive pusher biplane layout, twin booms, and tailplane. The aircraft’s open cockpit, rear-mounted propeller, fabric-covered wings, and early fighter armament installation are all visible, making this an excellent reference image of the British Vickers F.B.9 type that served on the Western Front around 1916–1917 and was later used for training.

The Vickers F.B.9 was an improved development of the pioneering Vickers F.B.5, one of the very first true fighter airplanes designed around a forward-firing machine gun. Although quickly outclassed by newer tractor fighters, the Gunbus marked a key step in the evolution of aerial combat tactics during WW1 and helped establish the idea of dedicated air superiority aircraft. Owning this original 1940s print of an early fighter design taps directly into that formative moment in aviation history and is the kind of rare visual artifact serious collectors move quickly on before it disappears into another collection.

Print analysis:
The back stamp from Aeroplane Photo Supply of Toronto with a specific photo number, “Reproduction Forofferden” notice, and catalogue price indicates a commercial aviation collector print, not a modern copy. The semi-gloss fiber paper, neutral tonality, and period rubber stamp style are consistent with 1940s production from an earlier WW1 negative. Given that the original Vickers F.B.9 dates to about 1916 and this was printed by a specialty supplier decades later, this is best classified as a Type 2 photo, printed from the original or a first-generation negative in c1940s.
