DESCRIPTION:

Up for sale is a fascinating, museum-quality piece of World War I military history: a custom-made US Army identification tag belonging to Private J. S. Monger, who served in Battery D of the 110th Field Artillery Regiment, 54th Field Artillery Brigade, 29th "Blue and Gray" Infantry Division. This unique artifact is a classic example of wartime "trench art" and personal ingenuity. The front of the tag is explicitly hand-stamped with the soldier's details:

  • Name: J. S. MONGER
  • Unit: BTRY - D
  • Country: U.S.A.
  • Unit: 110 .FA.
  • Official Service Number: 2161468

The reverse side reveals that this ID tag was meticulously crafted from a genuine, silver 1918 French 2 Francs coin. It features two clean, period-drilled holes used to secure it to a wrist chain. The original coin detailing is clearly visible, including the denomination "2 FRANCS", the date "1918", and the iconic French national motto "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE" wrapping around an olive and oak branch wreath.

CONDITION:

Used. Authentic World War 1 veteran-made trench art. Shows beautiful, tarnish / patina, distinct stamping, and historical wear consistent with frontline military use. Please see photos for exact condition details.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT & COMBAT TIMELINE:

The 110th Field Artillery Regiment was mobilized from the Maryland and Virginia National Guards. Battery D sailed for France in July 1918, trained intensely with French 75mm guns at Camp de Meucon, and was thrust directly into the brutal closing campaigns of the Great War. As part of the 29th Division, Private Monger's unit fought through the biggest American operation of the war, enduring heavy shelling, mud, mustard gas, and relentless combat conditions. Their documented frontline operational timeline includes:

  • October 3 to October 10, 1918: Arrival and Emplacement
The unit moved under cover of darkness into active combat sectors near Verdun, establishing hidden gun emplacements and stockpiling heavy ordnance in severe rain and deep mud.
  • October 11 to October 29, 1918: Battle of the Consenvoye Woods (Bois de Consenvoye)
Pushed into direct action on the east bank of the Meuse River, Battery D provided aggressive creeping barrages to support infantry storming fortified German machine-gun nests and concrete bunkers.
  • October 23 to October 28, 1918: Attack on the Belleu Woods (Bois de Belleu)
During some of the bloodiest fighting encountered by the division, the regiment fired round-the-clock artillery support to help infantry forces capture and hold the fiercely contested ridge lines against brutal German counter-attacks.
  • November 1 to November 11, 1918: The Final Advance to the Armistice
Following the shattering of German lines, the 110th shifted to a mobile stance to pursue retreating enemy forces, firing heavy barrages until the Armistice permanently silenced the guns at the 11th hour on November 11, 1918.

Following the war, Private Monger and Battery D returned home to the United States aboard the USS Zeppelin in May 1919 and were demobilized at Camp Dix, New Jersey.

RESEARCH POTENTIAL:

Because this tag clearly displays Private Monger's unique military service number (2161468), his historical troopship passenger lists, draft cards, and organization manifests are completely traceable through databases. His complete Official Military Personnel File (OMPF) is also eligible for public request through the National Archives (NPRC) as an archival record. This is an extraordinary opportunity to own a highly personal, completely identifiable piece of American Expeditionary Forces history.
