Offered together is a distinctive pair of traditional Philippine Cordillera-style utility knives with steel blades, hand-carved figural wooden handles, woven fiber bindings and fitted open-faced wooden scabbards.

The pair includes:

* Monkey-handled knife: Features an elongated crouching monkey figure carved in dark wood. The broad, asymmetrical blade is consistent with the general form of an Ifugao pinahig or related Philippine utility knife. Its dark wooden scabbard has an open front, wooden retaining elements, hanging loop and woven fiber bindings.

* Seated-figure knife: Features a carved seated anthropomorphic figure with crossed arms and raised knees. The broad, symmetrical leaf-shaped blade and curved projections near the handle are consistent with a hinalung-style knife. Its open-faced wooden scabbard has incised geometric borders, woven fiber bindings, hanging loops and red textile tassels.

The seated carving resembles figural traditions associated with the Ifugao and neighboring Cordillera peoples, although no claim is made that it is a consecrated or ceremonial bulul figure.

Each knife measures approximately 15 inches long when sheathed. Both knives and both corresponding scabbards are included.

The pair is in vintage preowned condition with substantial surface character. The steel blades show scratches, tool and grind marks, oxidation, dark spotting, discoloration and developed patina. The blades have not been polished or professionally evaluated for composition, age or sharpness.

The carved wooden handles and scabbards display scratches, finish wear, small chips and nicks, dents, rubbed edges, color variation and areas of exposed lighter wood. A visible age line or small split appears in the wooden collar near the blade of the monkey-handled knife. The bindings show dryness, discoloration, looseness and scattered fraying. The red tassels show wear and fuzzing. One scabbard has pale surface residue or discoloration near its lower end. Hanging loops remain present. No maker’s marks were observed.

The carved figures remain visually expressive, and both knives fit within their respective scabbards. These pieces have not been restored, sharpened or refinished.

Includes one plain single-edged utility blade and one plain double-edged leaf-form blade. Neither blade is serrated.
