Chicago's Mortens Studio was founded in 1931 by Swedish immigrant Oscar Morten, who over the following decades sculpted more than 300 dog and horse models using ceramic built over an internal wire skeleton. That construction method let the studio's artists render fine facial detail, from the Bulldog's droopy jowls to its inquisitive, alert eyes, with a realism that set the line apart from mass-produced giftware of the era. Mint-condition survivors of this scale are increasingly hard to find as crazing and chipping affect older examples over time.
