Wonderful vintage pair ofFrench faience salt and pepper shakers, each individually hand painted with traditional Breton figures and colorful floral/foliate decoration. (see numbers on bottom)
One shaker depicts aBreton gentlemanin traditional clothing, while the companion depicts aBreton womanin regional dress. Both are decorated in the classic French faience palette of cobalt blue, yellow, green, orange and black against a creamy white glazed ground.
The undersides show the characteristic unglazed faience foot rims along withhand-painted production/pattern numbers or decorator markings. One shaker retains its old cork stopper.
The colorful Breton figures, stylized foliage and folk-art character are closely associated with theQuimper/Brittany faience tradition. No specific Quimper factory attribution is being made unless additional maker documentation can be established.
Condition:Very good vintage condition with expected age-related wear, minor glaze/decoration variation and discoloration to the unglazed foot rims. One retains its cork stopper. Please review photographs carefully for exact condition.
