*Before E.T., before the movie posters, before anyone knew her name, four-year-old Drew Barrymore appeared in this McDonald’s commercial.* Here is the actual 16mm television print of that 1979 spot, preserved on its original reel with its McDonald’s film box. The commercial features young Drew enjoying a sundae during McDonald’s “Kid’s Day” promotion.
That is what makes this find so special. You can watch a familiar childhood McDonald’s ad online...but this is the physical film print, made to be played through the television equipment of its day. It brings together an early appearance by a future star, one of the world’s most recognizable brands, and a surviving piece of 1970s broadcast history.
The original box bears the Cinema Prints Inc. name and is marked “McDONALD’S,” “KID’S DAY/SUNDAES,” and “1-16MM COLOR TV PRINT.” The film itself shows the restaurant, the family, close-ups of young Drew, and the McDonald’s “Kid’s Day” end card. A copyright notice visible in the footage dates the commercial to 1979.
This reel was discovered by a local station employee. Film commercials were working materials, and many were discarded after their broadcasts ended. Finding this particular Drew Barrymore commercial on an original 16mm reel, with its labeled box, is the kind of discovery a film or advertising collector dreams about.
