Vintage 1995 Onimen Toki - Red Oni Sake Bottle from Kumamoto, JapanFrom my personal collection in Trat, Thailand.
My uncle brought this home from Kumamoto in 1995 after working there. It has been sitting in our family house ever since.
This is Onimen Toki, the red oni demon. It was made as a local souvenir in Kumamoto for a short time in the 90s. The kiln no longer produces this design.
Details:- Year: 1995 (Heisei 7)- Origin: Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan- Material: Ceramic- Height: approx 19 cm- Weight: heavy, solid ceramic- Condition: Vintage condition. White hair has naturally yellowed with age. Small paint wear on the nose and top from 31 years of storage. No cracks, no repairs. Please see all photos.
This mask was believed in Japan to ward off evil spirits. In the Momotaro story, the red oni is defeated and becomes a guardian. Many shops in Kyushu used to display it for good luck.
This design is now discontinued and hard to find outside Japan, especially with the hair still complete.
I will pack it very carefully with bubble wrap and double box for safe international shipping.
