The Art of Walt Disney by Robert D. Feild. This is the true first edition published in 1942 in the USA by The Macmillan Company. It is of much higher quality than the later 1944-45 wartime UK edition. This landmark book was the first serious study of animated filmmaking at the Walt Disney Studio. It was written in a clear and readable style by Harvard University Professor Robert D. Feild, who gave lectures and held classes for artists at the Disney Studio in the 1930s.

The book was first published in 1942 as Walt Disney and staff were settling into their new facility in Burbank, and the "plant" is described in detail. All aspects of the filmmaking process are covered, including story (origin, storyboard, conference); character development; animation; layout and background; music; and camera. Included are excerpts from transcripts of story meetings, and color and black-and-white illustrations of animation art and photographs appear throughout.
