Pipe DescriptionI could have sworn Dunhill’s elusive 52HU Hungarian was a one-year wonder, appearing only in 1976 before vanishing into the Dunhill spellbook. Yet, lo and behold, the pipe wizards have produced a surprise... here we have an incredibly rare example from 1977!This was a fascinating time of change at Dunhill. Richard Dunhill, grandson of the legendary Alfred Dunhill, was busy stirring the cauldron with new finishes, fresh ideas, and an assortment of experimental shapes. Some became regular members of the Dunhill lineup, while others appeared briefly and then disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived. The 52HU Hungarian certainly seems to be one of those elusive creations!I believe this beauty falls into Group 4 territory, with a wonderfully formed bowl featuring thick walls, a crisp rim, and a deep, generous chamber. Then comes the real magic! To the rear is that unmistakable Oom Paul/Hungarian transition, flowing into an almost fully bent shank that looks as though it were attached directly to the bowl. The proportions are fantastic, with the shank rising nearly level with the rim and giving the pipe that wonderfully dramatic Hungarian silhouette.The original saddle vulcanite stem remains in place, complete with its fishtail bit and, of course, Dunhill’s famous little White Spot.And that Root Briar finish! Absolutely gorgeous, glowing with warm golden undertones and displaying a delightful mixture of fine angel-hair grain and scattered birdseye.Rare shape, unusual year, beautiful Root Briar, and unmistakable Dunhill character. Add it all together and you have one seriously special piece of English pipe-making history.
