Lacquer boxes like this one are part of a traditional Russian folk art that are crafted in distinct villages in Russia. There are four main schools known for the craft of lacquer boxes: Palekh, Fedoskino, Mstera and Kholui (or Kholuy).The boxes are traditionally made of papier-mâché through a long process, then hand painted using egg tempera. The images generally depict scenes from Russian folk tales, fairy tales, religious figures from stories or flowers and butterflies.Approximately 3.25” in diameter by 1.25” tall.Pre-owned with no detectable defects.
