Old Japanese Artist Portfolio Album (Gajō) by Katsura Saburō (桂三郎)Format: Orihon (accordion-fold/concertina binding) in maroon raw silk cloth covers with an unwritten paper title slip (daisen).Dimensions: 27 x 24 x 1.5 cm.
15 original hand-painted ink and watercolor spreads on paper, featuring a diverse range of genres including Bird-and-Flower (Kachō-ga), Sumo wrestlers, festival figures, and botanical studies (roses and poinsettia). Accompanied by 1 loose, laid-in shikishi board depicting a blue orchid bouquet, bearing the red intaglio artist seal reading "Katsura Saburō ga" remain vibrant and clean with excellent ink retention. Binding is strong and intact at the folds. Minor worming present strictly in a few blank background areas, not affecting the central painted compositions. Otherwise a very well-preserved mid-20th-century example.
An accordion-fold album of fifteen original watercolor and ink paintings from Japan, all by one hand, with a sixteenth painting laid in on a gilt-edged shikishi board and stamped with the artist's red chop. The subjects are the classic seasonal motifs of Japanese brush painting: plum and weeping cherry blossoms, wisteria, bamboo, cyclamen, poinsettia, narcissus with red nandina berries, orchids, yellow and red roses, and several birds, including a bird on pine, a flight-poised sparrow among bamboo, and three tree sparrows on a bare branch. Two pages are livelier: a pair of children's toys, one a boy on a hobby horse, and a spirited ink study of two sumo wrestlers locked in a hold.
Albums like this were made to be turned and enjoyed page by page, and they were often painted as a personal or gift set. The loose, wet washes, ink-and-color bamboo and bird studies, and shikishi-style board follow the traditional Japanese amateur and professional painting-album format. The artist's chop is unread and no signature appears, so the maker is unidentified. We date it to the Showa period, likely mid 20th century, based on the style and materials.
Size: 10.75 x 9.5 x 0.6 in. (27.3 x 24.1 x 1.5 cm), closed. Covers are silk-textured cloth over boards, possibly raw silk, with a blank cream label panel on the front. The pages are cream, laid-texture paper.
Condition: Paint is clean and bright, with no fading or flaking seen in the art areas. A few small worm holes appear in background areas only and touch no painted image. The rear board has a strip of old tape with adhesive residue at the top corner. The covers show light rubbing. Please study all photos, which are part of the description.
