Here is a beautiful pre-1600 Mogollon Mimbres Classic painted bowl approx. 1000-1100 a. d. -attributing it to the layout of the quadrants painted inside the bowl with zigzags and parallel hachure shading. The bowl measures approx. 7 7/8"wide x 3 15/16" High. It is fairly round. This bowl looks to made of a reddish brown mix, then white slipped and painted with probably an iron based mineral pigment-as there are sections that black designs and in another part if looks reddish brown. I have read that ancient Southwestern potters may have used color for a code in their pieces. There is no written history-just opinions of scholars.
There is a cross inside the square at the bottom of this bowl-indicative of the third early style.
According to modern scholars/experts in Pre1600 Southwest art and cultures, the cross represents the four cardinal directions-and the center of the cross is the center of the world.
A hole ("kill hole") was punched deliberately through the center of the bowl, then placed over the face of the deceased. I have read that the deceased is the owner of the bowl or a family member. The punching of the hole was a ritual act believed to "kill" the vessel, allowing its spirit and the soul of the deceased to pass through the center of the cross and navigate into the afterlife.
This is from my personal collection-I purchased this at the Santa Fe Winter Market in 1987. This is NOT a reproduction.
Please ask any questions that you may have-or if you would like to see more photos. I do not want to have to have this wonderful historical piece have to endure more than one shipping. Adult signature will be required when shipped. Local pickup is encouraged. Related Items:
