An authentic vintage Limoges hinged trinket box in the form of a hot air balloon, hand painted in France and signed Peint Main on the base. It is highly collectible. The envelope is striped in cobalt and flame orange beneath a gilt crown, with swagged drapery, gold tassels, and a sky-blue lower balloon with gold accents. Two gentlemen aeronauts stand in a woven gondola below. The halves are joined by an ornate gilt metal band with a sculpted sun-face clasp, a nod to Louis XIV, the Sun King. The balloon itself is a French subject, since the Montgolfier balloon carried the first human passengers over Paris in 1783.

The base is inscribed Peint Main in the painter's hand, with the painter's initials and a green porcelain mark. The box measures approximately 2.5" height tall and 2"diameter wide. Because each box is painted by hand, details vary from piece to piece, and the photos show this exact box. It is in very good vintage condition, with bright, intact decoration and a working hinge and clasp. As a vintage piece, it shows signs of age, including light gilding wear on the base foot rim.
