John Quincy Adams Declines Vermont Address Amid His Fight Against the Slavery Gag Rule
Sixth President of the United States, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, handwritten autograph letter dated Jan 22, 1838 from Washington, declining an invitation to address the Literary Societies at the University of Vermont\'s commencement ceremonies the following August. Signed at conclusion as \"J.Q. Adams\".
A copy of Adams\' reply is also documented in the Adams Family Papers manuscript collection of the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Th invitation to address the Literary Societies of the University of Vermont on the day of the annualcommencement in Augustnext would be as gratifying as the instinction of their disposition to give it is flattering to me were it in my power to contract the engagement tocomply with it – I regret that it will not be in my power, and I havebeen under the necessity of declining several invitations of the same nature from other sources.

In 1838, Adams was serving as aprominent U.S. Representative from Massachusetts having quietly returned to public service in the House of Representatives after his presidency. He spent 1838 as one of the nation\'s most outspoken and relentless defenders of civil liberties and opponents of slavery.The House’s “gag rule” required petitions concerning slavery to be set aside without discussion. In his diary on the date of this letter, Adams recorded being asked whether he intended to seek its repeal: “I said I should wait till petitions should come in for the rescinding, as I expected them in great numbers.”
