The Guest Book of Chester and Lili Morris 1942-1948This sale is for a one-of-a-kind piece of authentic Hollywood memorabilia: the guest book of actor Chester Morris and his wife Lili. This book sat in the entryway of their home between 1942 and 1948, where guests would sign in (many of them also making humorous little personal notes). Most entries also include the signer's home address. Dimensions are around 10 inches x 8 inches. Many blank pages to the rear of the volume.
Owned by Chester and Lili Morris. Chester Morris was a roadway, vaudeville, and move star who passed away in 1970. His second wife was socialite Lili Kenton Barker, whom he married in 1940. This guest book is from their home in the 1940’s. Morris was nominated for an Academy Award for the film Alibi. He also portrayed Boston Blackie in a series of films in the 1940’s.
There are over 80 signatures within these pages, and include some VERY desirable and famous individuals. But there's no way I was able to find them all. Names like Humphry Bogart (and his first wife Mayo), Vincent Price, Frank Morgan, Danny Kaye, and Johnny Green are here, and so many more. Each has hand-signed the book.

Humphrey Bogart – The famed actor. Star of Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen, and many others.
Mayo Bogart – Mayo Methot originally, the first wife of Humphrey Bogart. They met on the set of Marked Woman.
Frank Morgan – Best known for portraying the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz. His wife Alma Morgan also signed.
Johnny Green – Songwriter, conductor, and composer who won five Academy Awards. Best known for his jazz standard “Body and Soul.”
Collier Young – Film producer and writer. Married to both Ida Lupino and Joan Fontaine (but not at the same time, fortunately). Also created the TV series Ironside.
Vincent Price – One of the kings of horror (despite having success in many genres, and not always as a villain), appearing in such films as The Fly, House on Haunted Hill, The Pit and the Pendulum, and Edward Scissorhands. He also played Egghead in the Batman TV series.
Reginald Gardiner – Actor who appeared in such films as Christmas in Connecticut, Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator, and the Laurel and Hardy film Flying Deuces. His wife Nadia also signed (herself an actress).
Frank Fenton – Stage, film, and TV actor. Appeared in such films as Lady of Burlesque and It’s a Wonderful Life. His wife Queenie also signed.
Phyllis Brooks – Actress and model. At one time engaged to Cary Grant. Known as the Ipana Toothpaste Girl for her modeling for that product. Appeared in films such as Little Miss Broadway (with Shirley Temple) and the Charlie Chan series.
Renee Godfrey – Actress and singer. Appeared in such films as Terror by Night and Inherit the Wind. Married to Peter Godfrey.
Peter Godfrey – Actor and film director, married to Renee Gofrey. Appeared in films like Raffles and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (the Tracey version in 1941). Directed films including Cry Wolf and Please Murder Me. Founded the Gate Theatre Salon.
John Conte – Actor and TV host. Appeared in the Man With the Golden Arm. Host of star Time and Matinee Theatre.
Danny Kaye – Famed actor, dancer, singer, and comedian. Appeared in films such as Hans Christian Anderson, The Inspector General, and White Christmas. Married to Sylvia Fine Kaye.
Sylvia Fine Kaye – Songwriter who was married to Danny Kaye. Wrote or co-wrote many of the songs he performed in film. Nominated for two Oscars.
Herbert Marshall – Film and radio actor. Appeared in such films as The Razor’s Edge, The Little Foxes, and the Hitchcock films Murder! and Foreign Correspondent. Lost his leg in World War I. His wife Lee also signed.
Kent Smith – Actor who appeared in films such as Cat People and The Fountainhead. His wife Billy also signed.
Richard Lane – Actor who appeared as Inspector Farraday in the Boston Black films (alongside Chester Morris). Also noted as a wrestling and roller derby announcer. His wife Esther also signed.
Crane Wilbur – Prolific writer, actor, and director. Gained fame from the Perils of Pauline serial. Wrote the screenplay for the Vincent Price Hose of Wax, and directed his rendition of The Bat.
Lenita Lane – Actress, appeared in many films including Vincent Price’s The Bat.
Oleg Cassini – Fashion designer. Developed Jacqueline Kennedy’s wardrobe during her time as first lady. Married to Gene Tierney.
Gene Tierney – Academy-award -nominated actress. Starred in films such as Laura, Heaven Can Wait, and Leave Her to Heaven. Married to Oleg Cassini.
Myron McCormick – Stage and film actor. Won a Tony Award for his role in South Pacific, where he appeared in over 1,800 performances.
Bert Kalmar – Songwriter in the Songwriting Hall of Fame. Co-wrote much of the music the Marx Brothers used (including Hooray for Captain Spalding), as well as the standards “I Wanna Be Loved By You” and “Who’s Sorry Now.” His wife Jessie also signed.
Dorothy Gish – Stage and film actress. Sister of Lilian Gish.
Louis Calhern – Actor. Appeared in films such as Duck Soup, The Asphalt Jungle, and Annie Get Your Gun.
Elizabeth “Betty” Reinhardt – Screenwriter with credits such as Laura and Give My Regards to Broadway. Married to John Reinhardt.
John Reinhardt – Actor, screenwriter, and film director. Directed the film noir High Tide. Married to Elizabeth Reinhardt.
Roland Young – Academy Award Nominated actor. Appeared in The Philadelphia Story, and in the series of Topper films. Also a renowned caricature artist.
Marcela Howard – Actress. Wife of Charles Howard, who owned Seabiscuit.
Sam Jaffe –Agent, producer, and studio executive. Represented Humphry Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Richard Burton, Stanley Kubrick, and many others. Produced Born Free. His wife Mildred also signed.
Philipa Goodwin – Actress. Married to actor Bill Goodwin. Named Glamour Mother of the Year in 1945.
Jane Wyatt – Actress, winner of three Emmy Awards. Starred in Lost Horizon, and in the TV show Father Knows Best. Also played Spock’s mother on Star Trek. Signed as “Jane Ward” along with her husband Edgar Ward.
Bernard Nedell – Actor. Appeared in films such as Some Like it Hot, Ziegfeld Girl, and Northern Pursuit. Married to Olive Nedell.
Olive Nedell – Actress. Appeared in many films, including the Henry Aldrich series of movies. Married to Bernard Nedell.
