This vintage radio came to me 9-16-2026. It looks like it wasn’t used much. I installed a battery and the radio worked, but it did not get very loud and I could hear the classic “Shower Sound” across the entire band that indicated it had a bad transistor. Its speaker was loose and banging around, its dials were loose… Let’s service this radio…Research:
Radiomuseum says this radio was made in 1980. It is a single IF stage design and has five transistors.Repair:
I disassembled the radio. First I replace the two electrolytic capacitors this radio uses. Both measured 50% beyond their rated values, so it was time.Next, using my signal tracer, I isolated the noisy transistor to its driver. I replace the driver transistor and that fixed the “shower sound” and the radio’s low volume problem was repaired.A drop of deox in its volume control… I put the radio back together. I peaked its alignment and checked its earphone jack. Works like new.Performance:
Volume control goes smoothly from totally silent to overload loud. For strong local stations it produces a sound that is Clean and Clear.This is a five transistor, single IF stage radio. Designed for the reception of local stations, it tuned all the local stations in the Portland area with ease.Condition:
