The U.S. Representative from Virginia wrote this letter in 1981, and wrote another 31 years later to a collector, surprised and flattered about seeing his piece for sale on the internet
Typed Letter signed: "G William Whitehurst" as U.S. Representative from Virginia, 1 page, 8½x11. Washington, District of Columbia, March 25, 1981. On letterhead of Congress of the United States, House of Representatives to Mr. John S. Bush, Jr., Vice President, Governmental Affairs, United States Gypsum Company, Washington, District of Columbia. In full: "Thank you for your March 20 letter and for providing me with a copy of your interesting 1980 Annual Report. In addition, I appreciate your passing along pertinent data concerning the gypsum industry, and I am keeping it on hand for ready reference as I am sure it will be helpful to me. With all best wishes, I remain Sincerely". Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold touches the upper loop of the "h" in Whitehurst. Pin holes at upper left margin, date stamp at upper right edge. Accompanied by: Typed Letter signed: "Bill Whitehurst", 1 page, 8½x11. Norfolk, Virginia, July 9, 2012. On letterhead of Old Dominion University, addressed to Mr. Todd Axelrod, President, History For Sale, Las Vegas, Nevada. In part: "While looking through the Internet for copies of my congressional diary, I came across your advertisements of letters from public figures in the past and present and saw that you have one of mine … I must confess that I was very surprised, not only to find that a let-ter of mine would find its way into your collection … Now if you find that this letter is marketable, by all means feel free to take advantage of it … Simply knowing that anyone would wish to pay for it is ample reward for me." Fine condition. Accompanied by: Typed Letter signed: "Bill Whitehurst", 1 page, 8½x11. Norfolk, Virginia, 2012 July 9. On letterhead of Old Dominion University, addressed to Mr. Todd Axelrod, President, History For Sale, Las Vegas, Nevada. In part: "In my letter to you regarding your offering for sale one of my con-gressional letters, which I have already posted, I kept a copy and after reading it through caught a typographical omission … I have truly enjoyed corresponding with you and do so in a spirit of humor and no spite at all." Fine condition. Accompanied by: the transmittal envelope, addressed to Mr. Todd Axelrod, President, Las Vegas, Nevada and postmarked Norfolk, Virginia, July 9, 2012. George William "Bill" Whitehurst (b. 1925) was a Republican congressman from Virginia who served in the U.S. House from 1969 to 1987. In 1950, he earned a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University. He then went on to receive his master's degree from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. from West Virginia University. From 1943 until 1946, Whitehurst served in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War as an aviation radioman in the Pacific Theater. After teaching at Old Dominion College for almost 20 years, he became a journalist for WTAR-TV in Norfolk, Virginia (1962-1968). Elected to the 91st Congress, Whitehurst continued his service in the eight succeeding Congresses. After retiring from Congress, Whitehurst returned to Old Dominion College as chair of Kaufman Lecturer in Public Affairs. 4 Items.
