Beautiful signed Emil Milan hand-carved walnut bowl, a striking example of mid-century American studio woodworking. The bowl has a long, sculptural biomorphic / leaf-like form with sweeping pointed ends and expressive natural walnut grain. Signed on the underside “Emil Milan”, identified as walnut, and additionally marked “2.”Emil Milan (1922–1985) was an American sculptor and woodworker known for his carved bowls, serving pieces, birds, and other functional wood objects. His work is associated with the American Mid-Century Modern craft movement and is represented in museum collections. Approximate measurements: 18 inches long x 6 inches wide x 2 inches high. The walnut displays beautiful natural grain variation along with organic knots, fissures/voids, and other characteristics of the wood that add to the sculptural appearance. There is also a more visible natural split/fissure within the bowl; please see close-up photos. Additional light scratches, marks, and surface wear are present consistent with age and use.A wonderful display piece for Mid-Century Modern, organic modern, studio craft, or autumn/harvest decor. Its elongated form would look especially good filled with nuts, pinecones, seasonal fruit, or displayed on its own as sculptural wood art.
