Scarce Spode's early 19th century coffee can featuring a floral and insect motif. The handle is Spode's "kicked handle" of the 1810-1815 period. The can is 2-1/2" in diameter and 2-1/2" high. Marked "Spode" in red, and most likely their "1025" pattern. Nice examples of Spode's "Pluck and Dust" method of printing. This piece dates to about 1810. Pluck and dust is a technique similar to bat printing. It was less fine but more hard wearing, as it was printed under the glaze. It was introduced by Spode in 1806, and was only in production for 10 years or so, being phased out as transfer printing became cheaper and more refined. Rare pieces.In excellent antique condition but it has a stable crack in the handle. It has not been repaired but again, it is stable and can be used without repair. It shows very little wear to the transfers or the gilding - it is all intact. No cracks, chips or repairs.
