The fire protection of the internal troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs was a specialized service created to protect military facilities, warehouses, arsenals, barracks and strategic structures from fires. Its history dates back to the post-war years, when the army began to form separate fire departments to ensure safety in places where explosive materials, fuel and equipment were stored. Over time, this service became part of the system of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
During the Cold War, the fire protection of the internal troops had not only the usual functions of extinguishing fires, but also tasks of strategic importance - preventing sabotage, eliminating the consequences of explosions, accidents and man-made disasters. Its units worked at military bases, at secret facilities, in garrisons and industrial zones, where equipment of military importance was located.
The personnel underwent special training in fire safety, engineering and emergency response. They used special equipment - fire trucks, tankers, motor pumps and chemical protection equipment. If necessary, fire departments were involved in the elimination of the consequences of natural disasters, major accidents or fires at civilian facilities.
Thus, the fire protection of the internal troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs combined the tasks of the regular fire service with military discipline and training, ensuring the safety of important state and defense facilities in peacetime and wartime.
