Exceptional antique wall-mounted match safe / fireplace match holder, approximately 7” high × 3.75 wide, featuring an elaborate Renaissance Revival design and beautifully aged original surface.
The sculptural casting features a central winged cherub/putto, scrolling foliage, opposing griffin or mythical animal heads, an urn-form crest, and a dramatic mascaron face at the base.One of its most distinctive features is the projecting fluted scallop-shell receptacle. More than decoration, the shell serves as a practical match receptacle/tray, keeping matches readily accessible when the piece was mounted beside a fireplace or stove. The ornate rectangular front section is hinged and functional.The reverse retains a partially legible cast manufacturer’s mark attributed to W.B. Mfg. Co. (Weidlich Brothers Manufacturing Company), together with additional worn cast markings that may represent a pattern or model number. The markings show age-related wear and have not been aggressively cleaned; please see the close-up photographs.
The substantial casting is non-magnetic and displays the rich brown, bronze-gold and reddish tones characteristic of an aged brass/bronze copper alloy, along with naturally developed oxidation and areas of verdigris. The exact alloy has not been laboratory tested.

A wonderfully unusual piece of early American decorative metalwork, combining an elaborate cherub-and-griffin design with its original practical function as a fireplace match safe.
