Antique Austrian Cold-Painted Bronze Miniature – Mother and Baby – Vienna, late 19th century

A wonderfully tiny and characterful Austrian cold-painted bronze miniature depicting a seated mother holding her baby.

Theentire scene measures only approximately 3.2 cm (1.26 in) high and 2.5 cm (0.98 in) wide— including the mother, child and tiny bench.

Despite its miniature scale, the figure contains remarkable detail. The mother is modelled with textured hair, hoop earrings, individually defined hands and feet, and a decorated dress. She holds a swaddled infant across her lap, with the baby's tiny face emerging from the elaborate painted wrapping.

The surviving cold-painted decoration includes black, yellow, blue, pink, white and metallic/silver-toned details. The surface shows considerable age-related wear and paint loss, clearly visible in the photographs, giving the miniature a particularly appealing antique character.

The photographs include the figure standing on aUS half-dollar coin for scale. The coin is shown for comparison only and is not Austria / Vienna

Vienna became particularly celebrated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for extraordinarily detailed cold-painted bronze miniatures. Animals, people, humorous scenes and everyday subjects were modelled at remarkably small scales and then individually decorated.

This little orientalist Black mother and child is a particularly charming example of that tradition: an entire domestic scene compressed into barely more than three centimetres.

No attribution to Franz Xaver Bergmann or another specific Viennese workshop is being made; the piece is offered as an unmarked Austrian/Viennese cold-painted bronze miniature.

A lovely little object for a collection of Vienna bronzes, antique miniatures, Austrian decorative arts, dolls' house-scale objects or unusual nineteenth-century curiosities.
