Antique framed alphabet sampler, hand-stitched in red cross stitch and signed by the maker, Ane Lucie Jakobsen, with a date that appears to read 1863.

The lower row includes the Danish letters æ, ø and å. The sampler is worked in rows of upper and lower case alphabets in several lettering styles, numbers, decorative bands and borders, and two small floral motifs flanking the signature. The red stitches stay crisp against the cream open-weave ground.

Technique: hand-worked cross stitch

Size: framed approx. 12 × 10 inches.

Frame: cream and gold-tone wood frame with glass with a paper backing and wire hanger. There is faded pencil handwriting on the back, “this goes to Ellen A Swan Sinclair”

Condition: antique and charming, with the age to match. Light toning and a few small marks in the cloth. The paper backing is aged, with small holes and a tear at the top edge. The frame shows wear, including small scuffs and chipped finish. I have not removed the piece from the frame.
