Up for sale is an authentic antique Old Sleepy Eye Stoneware pitcher produced by the Western Stoneware Company in Monmouth, Illinois between 1906-1937. This iconic piece of American advertising pottery features the relief molded portrait of Sioux Chief Sleepy Eye in striking cobalt blue glaze against a cream colored body. On the reverse it features the detailed relief scenes of trees, teepees and a campfire with a mother and child. This is the No. 4 (2.5 quart) size pitcher from the original production series. Its height is 8 inches measured from the tabletop to the highest point on the pouring lip. It measures 8.5 inches wide from the outer tip of the pouring lip to the outermost curve on the pouring handle. The pitcher is in high quality antique condition with the classic character expected of century old utility stoneware. The base is unmarked and displays gorgeous, all over fine webbed glaze crazing (crackle pattern) and light, natural coloration from age. There is a faint approximately 1inch hairline on the upper rim that sits entirely beneath the factory glaze. This is an original kiln-firing check from production, meaning the top glaze layer is completely smooth, intact and structurally sound. The handle is attached with clean, tight factory seams. No major chips, flea bites or modern structural cracks. This will be bubble wrapped and double boxed when shipped. Please review all photos carefully and if you have any questions please contact me.
