Antique 19th Century Large Format Full Plate Tintype Photograph - Gentleman PortraitUp for sale is a genuine piece of 19th-century photographic history: an original large-format Full Plate tintype photograph depicting a formal portrait of a gentleman dressed in a period suit and tie. This piece showcases excellent detail in the subject's expression and clothing, accented by subtle hand-tinted coloring on the cheeks and lips.Item Details & Dimensions:- Format Type: Tintype / Ferrotype (Emulsion on metal sheet)
- Physical Size: Measures approximately 8.5 inches by 6.5 inches (Full Plate size).
- Backside: Unmarked, plain dark brown japanned metal finish.
The tintype is in stable, Fair to Good (GD) antique condition.
- Surface Wear: The metal plate exhibits a dense network of light surface scratches, circular scuffs, and fine abrasions across the glossy coat, typical of un-cased large tintypes of this era.
- Edges & Flaking: Minor paint chipping, micro-flaking, and localized crazing/bubbling are present along the extreme outer borders and corners. A distinct vertical dark streak/emulsion blemish runs downward from the chin area.
- Reverse Side: The back of the plate displays uniform surface scratching and heavy flaking/lacquer loss along the bottom and side borders, exposing sections of the iron plate beneath. The metal plate remains flat, heavy, and structurally rigid.
To prevent any further surface scratching or flexing, this heavy metal tintype will be placed in a non-abrasive protective sleeve and shipped flat between thick, rigid layers of heavy cardboard in a heavily padded shipping box.Please inspect all high-resolution macro photos to verify the exact cosmetic details and surface condition before purchasing.
