This antique "Best Wishes" greeting postcard from the early 1900s is heavily embossed. A gilded steamship sails through blue water, dressed from bow to stern in pink roses and garlands of blue forget-me-nots. It has a white canopied deck, a flower-wrapped smokestack and gold pennants flying from the masts. Two white doves fly overhead, and loose roses float in the ship's wake. A gilt frame of vines, hearts and a life ring surrounds the scene, with gold "Best Wishes" lettering below. The card has a textured, pebbled background, deep embossing and bright gold highlights. It is marked "SER. 652" on the front.The divided back has a multilingual Union Postale Universelle heading, "Post card – Postkarte – Carte postale," in the style of the German-printed greeting cards of the period. It carries a 1902-series one-cent green Benjamin Franklin stamp and a partial postmark that appears to read Nov. 1907. The card is addressed to Mrs. Glennie Hayes, Dolgeville, N.Y. The pencil message to "Dear sister" mentions going to the train on Sunday, a visit from Mattie, and an afternoon trip to Loomis. It is signed with the initials E.M.B. This is an appealing piece for collectors of antique greeting postcards, maritime and ship imagery, Upstate New York postal history, and Edwardian ephemera.
The card measures approximately 5 5/16" x 3 3/8".
Condition: very good antique condition. The front is clean and bright, with strong gilt and color and crisp embossing. The corners and edges show light wear consistent with age. On the back are the handwritten message and address, the postmark and stamp, and a small pencil notation of "75" at the top. There are no tears or creases observed.
