2 Antique French Gatteaux Playing Cards Hogier & Charles c1816-1830 Pair:
$129.99
Offered here is a matching pair of early 19th-century French playing cards using the celebrated official court-card pattern designed by Nicolas-Marie Gatteaux.
The pair consists of:
* Hogier, Jack of Spades, shown with halberd and small dog
* Charles, King of Hearts, shown with sword, orb, crown and fleur-de-lis decoration
These belong to the French “Portrait Officiel” pattern introduced in the Napoleonic period and retained into the Bourbon Restoration. The presence of the fleur-de-lis imagery on Charles supports a dating to approximately 1816-1830, before later revisions removed Bourbon royal symbols.
Both cards retain the same distinctive pale back design composed of pink/red vermiform dotted lines, a back pattern documented on early French Gatteaux-pattern packs from this period.
The cards measure approximately 3.3 x 2.1 inches each. They show expected age-related toning, light surface wear and minor edge wear consistent with roughly 200 years of survival. Please examine the photographs closely for condition.
These are original antique playing cards, not later reproductions. No additional cards with this matching back pattern were found, so they are being offered together as a visually and historically coherent pair.
An appealing early French pair for collectors of antique playing cards, French ephemera, gaming history, Napoleonic-era material or early 19th-century graphic design.
