1991 Vintage Press Photo by UNITED PRESS/BETTMAN.Emperor Hirohito and General Douglas MacArthur first met on September 27, 1945, at the US Embassy in Tokyo. As the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, MacArthur purposefully used this meeting to establish American authority while treating the Emperor with respect to prevent public unrest. The event produced one of the most famous images of the 20th century. In it, MacArthur stands casually without a tie, looming over the Emperor, who appears shorter and tense in formal attire. This stark visual contrast shocked many Japanese citizens, for whom the Emperor had previously been considered a living god.Photo is Dated: April 12, 1991.
