This black and white silver gelatin print captures a candid moment of leisure at a mid-century modern swimming pool, circa the 1950s or early 1960s. A woman sits on the concrete pool edge, her posture relaxed as she engages with someone in the water. She wears a dark, one-piece swimsuit, her hair styled in a short, soft wave that frames her face, epitomizing the era's feminine aesthetic. The architectural backdrop is a significant element, featuring a building with large, horizontal paned windows and a clean, geometric overhang that is quintessential of post-war design. Outdoor patio furniture, including a distinctive umbrella and lounging chairs, further anchors the scene in a specific period of domestic and recreational life. The photograph possesses a vernacular intimacy, offering an unposed glimpse into a private or semi-public aquatic space of the period. The verso of the print is largely unmarked, presenting a clean, blank surface with only the mild paper discoloration and subtle imperfections consistent with its age. This absence of annotation preserves the image's mystery, focusing all interpretive value on the visual narrative of the front. The composition is expertly balanced, utilizing the strong horizontal lines of the architecture and pool edge to create a sense of serene order, while the human subjects provide a dynamic focal point. The print quality shows a full tonal range, from the deep shadows beneath the eaves to the bright highlights reflecting off the water's surface, demonstrating a skilled photographic technique in capturing outdoor ambient light. This image serves as a compelling document of mid-20th century material culture, architecture, and social recreation.
