SPAZRAEL’S OFFICIAL RAILROAD INVESTIGATION

Management assigned me a historical case involving a very large mess, widespread public confusion and numerous things ending up where they absolutely do not belong. Finally, work suited to my résumé.

Offered here is an intact group of 11 vintage black-and-white photographic snapshots documenting a major Pennsylvania Railroad freight-train wreck. The lot contains seven distinct photographic views plus four duplicate or near-duplicate prints.

Scenes include long approaches along the double-track railroad corridor, boxcars leaning and jackknifed across the tracks, close wreckage views, Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock, crowds gathered beside the roadway and a particularly clear view of Pennsylvania Railroad freight car no. 64933.

HISTORICAL IDENTIFICATION

Seller research attributes this group with high confidence to the August 12, 1948 Pennsylvania Railroad two-freight sideswipe and derailment at Wellsville, Ohio, along Riverside Avenue between Sixth and Ninth Streets.

The accident appeared on the front page of the East Liverpool Review under the headline “Sideswiping Tosses Up ‘Jumble’ of Boxcars.”

Contemporary reporting stated that two Pennsylvania Railroad freight trains containing more than 130 cars in total sideswiped while passing on the double tracks. Approximately 30 cars were derailed or wrecked, several hundred feet of railroad right-of-way were damaged and freight cars were thrown toward Riverside Avenue. Hundreds of spectators gathered around the wreck. Nine crewmen were unhurt, while one conductor received minor injuries.

The westbound freight was diesel-powered. The eastbound freight was steam-powered and was reportedly hauling Ford Company equipment directly from Detroit.

One photograph in this group plainly shows Pennsylvania Railroad car no. 64933. This number falls within the PRR’s X37B 64400–65399 freight-car series. Published Pennsylvania Railroad rolling-stock research documents X37B cars equipped and assigned for Ford automobile roofs, body parts and side panels—an unusually strong match to the contemporary newspaper report concerning Ford equipment from Detroit.

The photographs do not appear to have identifying captions on their fronts. The August 12, 1948 identification is a high-confidence seller research attribution based on the photographed location and scene, visible Pennsylvania Railroad lettering and freight-car number, period rolling-stock information and contemporary newspaper reporting. It is not represented as an institutional or third-party authentication.
