1922 ROBERT WEEKS DEFOREST & EMILY J DEFOREST 50th ANNIVERSARY 2" MEDAL M578This medal, marked Medallic Art Co NY on the rim, comes in its original box; the lid has become separated from the base over the years. It is by Evelyn Beatrice Longman. The metal content is not marked.
From the MFA Boston website:Gold-plated bronze. Obverse: Profile Portrait Busts of Robert and Emily DeForest. Dogwood flowers punctuate the raised inscription: ROBERT WEEKS DEFOREST EMILY JOHNSTON DEFOREST/ 1872 1922/ ELB. Reverse: An acorn tree rises from winged emblem; in the center of the tree's parted top branches is the head of a 5-point buck. Lily and thistle plants frame the trees trunk with the raised dates: 1637 1804. Lower edge: MEDALLIC ART CO. N.Y.

From Wikipedia:Robert Weeks DeForest(1848–1931) was an American lawyer,executive, financier, and philanthropist.Robert Weeks DeForest was born to Henry Grant and Julia Mary Weeks DeForest in New York City on April 25, 1848, of French Huguenot ancestry. His grandfathers were theSouth Streetmerchant Lockwood DeForest and theNew York Stock Exchange's first President,Robert Doughty Weeks. He attended primary school in New York City andEasthampton, Massachusetts, before graduating fromYale Collegewith honors in 1870. DeForest received his law degree fromColumbia Universitytwo years later and subsequently practiced law followingadmission to the Bar.

DeForest served asgeneral counselfor theCentral Railroad of New Jersey, and in 1902, became a vice president. He led theHackensack Water Companyfrom 1881 to 1926and served as its president for at least 15 years, and as a trustee or director of multiple other corporations. He also led public charity work. In 1901, PresidentTheodore Rooseveltappointed DeForest to the State Tenement House Commission, which he served as chairman and which produced theTenement House Act of 1901. It also led to the creation of a New York State Tenement House Department in 1902, following an amendment to the state charter. That year, DeForest was appointedNew York City's first Tenement House Commissioner. He also served the New York State Conference of Charities and Corrections as well as theNational Conference of Charities and Correction. In 1894, he co-founded and was the first president of theProvident Loan Society, which offered the poor lower interestloanalternatives toloan sharks. DeForest additionally served as a manager ofNewYork–Presbyterian Hospitaland theAmerican Bible Society,and dedicated 50 acres of hisLong Islandproperties throughWest HillsandDix Hillsinrights of wayto the state'sNorthern State Parkwayproject.

DeForest served as a trustee of theMetropolitan Museum of Artin 1889, and becameits presidentin 1913, followingJ. P. Morgan. The Museum later published a monograph by DeForest,Art in Merchandise: Notes on the Relationships of Stores and Museums, in 1928.

DeForest married Emily Johnson, the oldest daughter of Central Railroad of New Jersey PresidentJohn Taylor Johnston, in 1872 and had four children. One of these, Henry L. deForest, was president of Hackensack Water Company from 1936 to 1950,andLake DeForestis named after Henry.
