ORIGINAL 1913 REAL PHOTO POSTCARD

B.C. MINERS' LIBERATION LEAGUE TAG DAY

Vancouver Labour History / Vancouver Island Coal Strike

An exceptionally rare and historically important original Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) documenting the B.C. Miners' Liberation League Tag Day held on December 20, 1913, outside the Labour Temple in Vancouver.

This is an original period photographic postcard dating from 1913 — not a modern reproduction or later photographic print.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The photograph captures members and supporters of the B.C. Miners' Liberation League, including women and children, participating in a public Tag Day connected with the Vancouver Island coal miners' strike of 1912–1914.

The photograph contains unusually clear contemporary historical evidence. Several protest banners can be read directly in the original image, including:

• "WE WANT OUR DADDIES OUT OF JAIL!"

• "27 MEN KILLED ON VANCOUVER ISLAND EVERY YEAR FOR 25 YEARS"

• "B.C. MINERS LIBERATION LEAGUE TAG DAY DEC. 20. 13."

The historic Labour Temple building and period signage are also clearly visible in the background.

The event and this photographic scene are documented by British Columbia historical sources. The City of Vancouver Archives holds a photograph of the B.C. Miners Liberation League Tag Day outside the Labour Temple in 1913, catalogued as CVA 259-1.

The photograph has also been discussed by the BC Labour Heritage Centre in its research on Vancouver's early labour movement.

This makes the postcard particularly interesting as a primary visual record: the organization, event, date, participants, location, and contemporary protest messaging are all preserved within the photograph itself.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The Vancouver Island coal miners' strike of 1912–1914 was a major labour conflict in British Columbia. The B.C. Miners' Liberation League was involved in efforts connected with miners who had been imprisoned during the strike.

The Tag Day documented by this postcard took place on December 20, 1913, outside Vancouver's Labour Temple.

The banners visible in the photograph provide a rare contemporary view of how the event was presented by its participants and supporters.

For collectors of Canadian labour history, British Columbia history, Vancouver history, mining history, early social movements, documentary photography, and original RPPCs, this is an unusually specific historical image.

RESEARCH NOTE

The historical identification of the scene is supported by contemporary and later British Columbia historical research, including the BC Labour Heritage Centre and the City of Vancouver Archives.

The City of Vancouver Archives reference CVA 259-1 documents the B.C. Miners Liberation League Tag Day outside the Labour Temple in 1913.

This listing identifies the postcard as an original period photographic postcard depicting the documented event. It is not being represented as an archival copy owned by the City of Vancouver Archives.
