This tryptic is Greek, probably Northern Greece, and dates to the first half of the 19th century. These little folding triptychs were popular because they could be folded up and taken with a person while they traveled. The value of icons from this period is based primarily on the overall quality of painting. Yours is a little on the provincial or commercial side.

This hand-painted devotional icon features traditional egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed wood panels with Greek inscriptions. The icon folds closed for travel and protection, a format commonly used by pilgrims and clergy.

The triptych opens to reveal three beautifully detailed panels:

• Left panel: Four Orthodox saints / bishops with Greek inscriptions• Center panel: Virgin Mary (Mother of God) enthroned with Christ Child, flanked by angels• Right panel: Saint George on horseback, a highly desirable subject in Orthodox iconography

The exterior displays a painted Golgotha Cross, a traditional protective motif found on many pilgrimage icons.

Construction features hand-forged wire hinges and thick wooden panels, consistent with late 18th–early 19th century Orthodox devotional pieces produced in Greece or the Balkans.
