Rare 1887 Map of Port Ballona – Los Angeles County, CaliforniaOffered here is an impressive large-format antique map promoting the proposed town and harbor development of Port Ballona, Los Angeles County, California, dating to the historic Southern California land boom of the 1880s.
The map presents an extraordinarily detailed planned townsite divided into numbered blocks and individual lots, proposed streets and avenues, railroad routes, harbor facilities and the Pacific Ocean shoreline.
Promotional text describes Port Ballona as “The Future Harbor for Southern California” and references the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Rail Road and the Ballona Harbor and Improvement Company.
The lower portion contains a regional inset titled “Map of Port Ballona With Connections by Rail and Steamship,” showing Southern California and transportation connections extending across the Southwest.
Particularly striking is the illustrated harbor scene showing steamships, sailing vessels, railroad trains, piers and the envisioned development of the harbor. It is captioned:
“PORT BALLONA – FROM A SKETCH BY CHAS. H. HOWLAND, C.E. – 1887.”
The lower-right area carries the Schmidt Label & Lith. Co., S.F. imprint.
Port Ballona was an ambitious late-19th-century attempt to establish a major commercial harbor on Santa Monica Bay in the area associated today with Playa del Rey/Ballona. The project represents a fascinating chapter in the development of Los Angeles and Southern California transportation, real estate and maritime history.
CONDITION: This map is approximately 139 years old and is offered in as-found antique condition. There is substantial overall age toning/discoloration, staining and spotting; original/old fold lines and creasing; tears and separations along portions of the folds; areas of paper and surface loss; abrasions; handwritten markings/notations; and other age-related deterioration. The lower harbor illustration has particularly noticeable deterioration and losses. Please carefully examine all photographs, as they form an important part of the condition description.
The map is currently displayed behind glass in a large black frame. Frame shows wear and is included as found. No attempt has been made by the seller to clean, restore or alter the map.
An unusual survivor with outstanding visual and historical content relating to Port Ballona, Los Angeles, Santa Monica Bay, Southern California railroads and California's 1880s real-estate boom.
Frame is not holding good so might need a new frame. Plex-Glass type of material for the frame
