About this product

Product Information

Mike Leigh produces another devastating masterpiece with the heartbreaking VERA DRAKE. Imelda Staunton is the title character, beloved wife of Stan (Phil Davis) and mother of Sid (Daniel Mays) and Ethel (Alex Kelly). Vera spends her days cleaning houses for money and looking in on elderly and sick neighbors out of the kindness of her heart. She even attempts to be a matchmaker for her daughter, inviting a lonely neighbor, Reg (Eddie Marsan), to see if he might be a perfect match for the introverted Ethel. But Vera performs another duty that her family doesn't know about, one that is deeply frowned upon by society. When tragedy befalls a young client of Vera's, the truth comes out, forcing her family to see their mother in an entirely different light.Staunton gives a towering performance and, in typical Mike Leigh fashion, the story, characters, and script were built from a grueling and intricate improvisation process, resulting in a film that burns with heart-wrenching sincerity. Rather than take a heavy-handed approach towards his controversial subject matter, Leigh heroically remains non-judgmental, delivering an achingly humanistic drama that will linger with audiences long after they leave the theater.

    Poor acting, directing

Main character Vera - old woman, but very energetic, strong, works in factory, takes care of sick people all over the city, cleans riche's houses,no problem climbing stairs, walking distances, all good till she gets caught for "helping" / doing abortions. ALL of a SUDDEN - she can not move, walk, stand up, or speak. In a blink she became so frail, it's unbelievable. Bad directing. Vera was doing illegal thing - "helping", but when caught - she admits guilty. So was she "helping" or what ? Actions speak louder than words. Other characters also non appealing in the movie. The Irish dialect / Irish English language is hard to understand, as the characters speak most of time in whisper. Dialog not interesting. Overall - waste of time and money. That's my opinion. Always rent first, ...

  • A powerful period piece

This film captures the atmosphere of lower-class London life in the years after World War II. Against a background of post-war rationing and deprivation, Vera Drake (Imelda Staunton) is a selfless woman who performs small favours for her neighbors in council flats (low-cost housing) in East London. One of the favours she performs is to terminate pregnancies, revisiting her own childhood in which she had entered life as an unwanted baby. The contrast between the lifestyle of the wealthy who can visit expensive nursing homes and Vera's neighbours, who need her (uncharged for) services, is ever-present but not overplayed. Vera's immediate family knows nothing of her part-time activities and the issues of family pride, love, and loyalty are cleverly brought into conflict when she is ...

  • A feminist film

Decades ago, when abortion was illegal, girls 'in trouble' had a hard time of it. Vera Drake, an English charwoman, has a heart of gold and sets about helping these young women. Through the help of a procurer, Vera is sent to the private homes/apartments of these young women and performs abortions. The method she uses is soap shavings mixed with water, and a syringe. WARNING: This procedure is usually fatal, according to the experts, and should not be tried at home! In the film, though, Vera completes more abortions successfully than not, all the while cleaning for the rich, and keeping a modest and well-loved household at home in cramped quarters that nobody seems to mind. Vera's family is completely unaware that she is doing this, so when a young woman becomes dreadfully sick ...

  • Good Actress

This is definately not a high budget movie and some of the characters are rather strange. But I would have to say it is a very good movie, due to Imelda Staunton's acting. Wow!!. It started out slow, but during the second half of the movie her acting blew me away. Kept me glued to the screen. Not a movie for everyone. But I really enjoyed it. Rather dark subject matter for some people. But if you enjoy good acting, see this movie.
