Vintage West Palm Beach Fishing Club – 18K Gold Enamel Sailfish Lapel Pin by The Dorst Co.
A classic club pin from one of the most storied sport fishing clubs in the world. A blue enamel sailfish leaps across a crisp white enamel field, framed by "West Palm Beach Fishing Club" in gold lettering. Small at 9/16", but sharp, clean, and full of old Florida character.
The back is stamped 18K (the stamp is worn; see close-up photo). The original screw-back nut is marked "The Dorst Co. Cincinnati O.", the Cincinnati maker known for fine gold club, service, and award pins.
Likely made circa 1934–1950s, between the club's founding in 1934 and the end of The Dorst Co.'s documented Cincinnati operations around 1950.
About the club:
The West Palm Beach Fishing Club was founded in 1934 as a civic effort to revive local tourism during the Great Depression, and it quickly became one of Florida's great angling institutions. Its Silver Sailfish Derby, first held in 1935, is the longest-running billfish tournament in the world. The club helped pioneer catch-and-release fishing, introducing red pennants for released fish in 1938. Over the years its members have included Ernest Hemingway, Ted Williams, Sam Snead, and Jack Nicklaus. The clubhouse is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A great piece for sport fishing collectors, Florida memorabilia fans, members and families of the club, or anyone who loves a well-made vintage pin.
